For our winter issue, Twist Collective asked our contributors where they look for colour while the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun. Click on their images below for their answers, and for links to their individual websites.

Nature is my primary inspiration--flowers, trees, the sky, animals. Unfortunately, winter in Portland is a very gray affair. Literally gray, as it rains all the time, imparting a dull wash over everything. So in winter, I turn to my other favorite sources: historical fashion, textiles, and folk art. In looking at the embroideries on a French 19th century silk vest, or a Norwegian chest covered with Rosemaling (a kind of decorative painting). I find limitless inspiration.
